Evans Family Home: Picking up Sticks

We took a break in August to escape from the heat and spend more time harvesting our veggies from the summer garden. We picked buckets and buckets of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers all through August and September.

October 2008 has been a very busy month. We returned to the area where the large vegetable garden will reside and had to once again remove all of the weeds in that area. They were not nearly as bad as before but if you have any experience with ailanthis trees you know that they spread and grow quickly! Molly Steadman, Ann Wallinger and JoAnna Battin spent a long day in the mud removing all of those weeds and also tilled the area alongside the house where the strawberries will be planted in the spring. The weeds were moved as much as possible from the future strawberry beds and they were all covered with black plastic.

It was a long and grueling day, and too muddy for even the camera! Ann went back for another day and transplanted strawberries and Siberian Iris from her own garden, covering half of the strawberry beds. The remaining beds will winter over under the plastic until more strawberries can be grown. If anyone has some strawberries to donate or wants to grow some from seed for us please contact us!

We also spent a long hot day tilling next year's veggie garden and pulling out as many of the sticks and rocks as possible. Michael Steere and Jake Welbourne spent the entire morning with the tillers.

Marilyn and Bud also came out for the day and not only worked hard but also provided refreshments for the group, keeping everyone fueled with banana, apples and PB&J.
The Torian family (father Sam and two son's John and Jacob) joined us for the day and were a great help picking up sticks and rocks. With a little help they made a lot of progress on our rock wall that will lie against the fence to help keep the neighbors grass at bay.
And Greg spent hours helping Ann erect a fence to keep small animals out of the garden area.

Thanks to all the help we had on this long day, we managed to level the entire area and erect the 'bunny fence' around it so it is ready to plant in the spring! A special thanks goes out to JoAnna Battin and Sam, Jacob and John Torian for donating their time
